The risks of lone working

The risks of lone working

There are many myths surrounding lone working that would have people believe, for example, that lone workers are those who work only in isolated or remote areas, who don’t need specific training, and that the only threat they face is violence or abuse from customers or members of the public.

In reality, lone workers can be found across a wide spectrum of industries and job roles across both private and public sectors, from taxi drivers and parking attendants, to nursing staff and home carers. The threats they face are wide-ranging and varied; from slips, trips and falls, to animal attacks, chemical exposure, and electrocution. Any incident a lone worker is involved in could have disastrous consequences for his/her health and ability to work, and could have a significant impact on their employer’s business.

This infographic from LONEALERT examines some of the common risks facing a wide variety of lone workers and outlines what employers can (and should) do to mitigate those risks and keep their lone working employees safe.
