Protecting your lone workers

Protecting your lone workers

Protecting your staff who work alone, remotely or with vulnerable people need not cost the earth, but not doing so could not only be costly. It can be damaging.

Convenience and newsagent chain Martin McColl understand to well the damaging risks involved when staff are not adequately protected. McColl’s were fined £150,000 for failing to properly assess lone working and violent risks, despite receiving several improvement notices.

During the robberies, which took place in four different branches in merseyside, staff faced threats ranging from a knife and crowbar to a handgun. One member of staff who was getting out of his car, was approached by a hooded attacker, who punched him on the side of the head, causing him to have concussion and sustaining a possible skull fracture.

Carrying out adequate risk assessments and having the correct solutions in place for lone working staff and workplace violence is not only essential, it is the law. As an employer you have a duty of care to your staff, sadly McColl’s had either not carried out assessments, or they were inadequate, according to a spokesperson from Wirral Borough Council.
